March 19, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois has been ruled out for several weeks, after sustaining a meniscus tear in his right knee, during a training session on Tuesday. The Belgian goalkeeper had been expected to make his return to the La Liga club’s squad following an ACL tear in his left knee last August.
The 31-year-old underwent an MRI scan on Tuesday evening, which confirmed the damage to his right knee. A statement from Real Madrid read: “Following tests carried out today, our player Thibaut Courtois has been diagnosed with a ruptured internal meniscus in his right knee.”
The injury setback comes as a significant blow for the former Chelsea goalkeeper, who had been working tirelessly to regain fitness after his lengthy spell on the sidelines. Courtois’ absence will likely see the Croatian Andriy Lunin continue as Real Madrid’s first-choice goalkeeper in the coming weeks.
