November 28, (THEWILL) – Frank Lampard has been appointed as the new head coach of Coventry City Football Club, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Championship side.
The 46-year-old former England midfielder takes over a team currently positioned 17th in the league standings, just two points above the relegation zone, replacing long-serving manager Mark Robins who was dismissed earlier in the month.
Lampard’s appointment marks his fifth managerial role, following previous experiences at Derby County, Everton, and two periods with Chelsea. Since leaving his interim position at Stamford Bridge in May 2023, he has primarily worked in media commentary. His first match in charge will be a home fixture against Cardiff City on Saturday, presenting an immediate opportunity to impact the team’s performance.
Coventry owner Doug King expressed enthusiasm about Lampard’s recruitment, highlighting the new coach’s extensive Championship experience and understanding of top-level football management. Lampard, who made his Football League debut in 1995 and played his first senior game for West Ham in 1996, brings a wealth of professional playing and coaching experience to the role.
Throughout his distinguished playing career, Lampard made 649 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 211 goals and winning 11 major trophies.
His managerial career has included notable achievements, such as guiding Derby County to the Championship play-off final and providing opportunities to young talents like Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham during his Chelsea tenure.
The appointment represents a significant moment for Coventry City, with the club aiming to improve its current league position and potentially progress towards top-tier football. Lampard will need to quickly establish his tactical approach and motivate the squad to climb the Championship table during the remainder of the 2024/2025 season.
