December 30, (THEWILL) – New cases of positive coronavirus tests have been reported in Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, as the virus continues to spread across the Spanish football top flight division.
On Thursday, Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone, as well as key players Antoine Griezmann, Joao Felix, Koke, and Hector Herrera, all tested positive for the virus.
Following that announcement, three more Barcelona players tested positive, bringing the total number of verified cases in the squad to seven.
Sergino Dest, Philippe Coutinho, and Ez Abde are the latest players to contract the virus, which is spreading across Europe’s top divisions at an alarming rate.
In trying to put a more positive spin on the dreadful news, the statement from Barcelona read: “The players are in good health and self-isolating at home.”
Just one day after Jordi Alba’s positive test, the Catalan club confirmed that Ousmane Dembele, Samuel Umtiti, and Gavi had tested positive, as THEWILL reported.
On January 2, Barcelona will go to Mallorca in the league, while Atletico will host Rayo Vallecano on the same day.
THEWILL recalls that Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois, Ernesto Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga, and Vinicius Jr have all tested positive this week.
