BEVERLY HILLS, May 19, (THEWILL) – The Organising Committee for Women’s football of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) reached a decision, on Wednesday, to postpone the June qualifiers of the TOTAL Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be hosted by Morocco next year.
THEWILL recalls that the continental football governing body also recently postponed the qualifiers for the senior men’s national football teams for Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup as well.
The rationale put forward for both postponements remain the continued constraints posed by the COVID-19 pandemic on the continent and also infrastructure challenges in Africa that can put a strain on health and safety professionals.
According to the rescheduling set by CAF, first round qualifying matches for the women’s AFCON will now take place during the FIFA international window of October 18-26, 2021. The second round of due to be contested in the February 14-23, 2022 FIFA window.
