May 29, (THEWILL) – On Saturday night at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, Gervonta Davis once again demonstrated why he is one of boxing’s best knockout artists, stopping the previously undefeated Rolando Romero in the sixth round with a beautiful counter left, to retain his WBA secondary lightweight title.
The 27-year-old Davis had to deal with Romero’s strength, size and aggression throughout the battle. There were times when it appeared Romero might take command of the battle, but Davis delivered the right punch when he needed it.
Romero had tagged him in the jaw and then the abdomen with a right hand, but he ended up leaning into a counter left, which sent him falling into the ropes and unable to continue the fight.
Romero could not steady himself after and lost, even though he was leading on at least one scorecard going into the sixth round. In the build-up to the bout, the 26-year-old challenger did a lot of trash talking, even going as far as to promise a first-round knockout, but he could not deliver on that promise.
Davis now has 25 knockout victories in his 27-fight career and has successfully defended his WBA championship four times. He will be assured of another pay-per-view contest against a high-profile opponent, as he is now one of boxing’s top draws.
