November 02, (THEWILL) – Manchester City midfielder, Kevin De Bruyne, has spoken candidly about the hamstring issues that plagued him towards the end of last season, admitting he felt like his muscles were about to “implode”.
In an interview this week, the Belgian described the sensation in his hamstrings as being like a “wet kitchen towel” that could tear at any moment. De Bruyne first suffered a hamstring problem during the UEFA Champions League final in May, before picking up a similar injury on the opening weekend of the current 2023/2024 season.
The 31-year-old playmaker revealed he had to undergo surgery and regular scans are tracking his recovery. De Bruyne confessed to playing through the pain at the end of last season as City charged to the English Premier League title, but said he has no regrets over the decision.
While optimistic of making a full recovery, De Bruyne was keen to stress the importance of not rushing back too soon. With his contract set to expire in 2025, both player and club are thought to be keen to continue their successful partnership.
After making over 700 appearances during his career so far, De Bruyne likened the procedure to a major car service, aimed at keeping him in peak condition for the challenges ahead. For now though, the Belgian’s focus will be on making a safe and speedy return to action.
