December 03, (THEWILL) – A tragic stampede during a football match in N’Zerekore, Guinea, has claimed the lives of at least 56 people, with the government declaring three days of national mourning. The incident occurred during a cup tournament final organised in honour of junta leader, General Mamadi Doumbouya, which descended into chaos after controversial refereeing decisions sparked fan unrest.
Witnesses reported that the match between local teams erupted in violence when fans invaded the pitch following multiple contentious decisions, including two red cards and a late penalty. Security forces responded with tear gas, which escalated the situation and created widespread panic among the stadium’s attendees. The government confirmed that hospital services have registered 56 fatalities, with numerous additional injuries reported.
Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah, dispatched by Doumbouya, to investigate the incident, will lead an emergency mission to determine the precise circumstances of the tragedy. The junta leader has promised a comprehensive commission of enquiry to establish responsibility and prevent future occurrences. This incident follows a history of political tension in Guinea, where the military seized power in a 2021 coup.
Opposition groups, including the National Front for the Defence of the Constitution (FNDC), have criticised the junta’s management of the event. Former president, Alpha Conde, described the tragedy as a result of irresponsible organisation and inadequate preparation.
