March 19, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s Cyriel Dessers, has reacted to matching Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo’s goalscoring streaks in European competitions this season.
On Thursday, Dessers scored the first goal in Feyenoord’s 3-1 win over Partizan Belgrade, giving the Dutch club an 8-3 aggregate victory and a place in the Europa Conference League quarterfinals.
Dessers’ goal in the 45th minute was his sixth in five appearances in the competition, putting him on par with two of football’s best attackers for what the player himself regarded modestly as a “nice achievement.”
Dessers is the fourth player in the Champions League, Europa League, or Conference League this season to score in five consecutive matches, according to Opta, a sports analytics business that offers data for 30 sports in 70 countries.
Feyenoord’s number 33 has equaled Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski’s and Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo’s goals, and is only two goals behind Ajax’s Sébastien Haller (7).
Dessers was ecstatic to be a part of such a prestigious group of players, and with Feyenoord still in the competition, the 27-year-old hopes to surpass the trio.
Dessers noted that the record was “in itself a nice achievement,” and added, “Although I have to thank Jens (Toornstra) today. I can always use an extra goal to work on my statistics.
“There have already been beautiful and less beautiful ones, for it may take me a little longer. Let’s hope I can be alone in a row soon.”
When Feyenoord takes on Peter Olayinka’s Slavia Prague in the following round, Dessers will look to maintain his incredible scoring streak. However, the forward was once again left out of the Super Eagles’ team for the double-header playoffs against the Black Stars of Ghana.
