January 26, (THEWILL) – Rangers staged an impressive comeback to defeat Dundee United 3-1 in a Scottish Premiership encounter at Tannadice on Sunday. The visitors overturned an early deficit to claim their first come-from-behind victory in the league this season.
Sam Dalby opened the scoring for Dundee United, but goals from Mohamed Diomande, Robin Pröpper, and Cyriel Dessers ensured Rangers left with all three points. Dundee United started brightly and came close to taking the lead in the fourth minute when Dalby’s header from a Ryan Strain corner struck the post.
Rangers goalkeeper, Jack Butland, was called into action shortly after, making a crucial save to deny Luca Stephenson. However, Dalby eventually broke the deadlock in the 19th minute, capitalising on a defensive lapse to fire past Butland from close range after a long throw-in caused chaos in the Rangers box.
Rangers responded strongly, with Diomande equalising in the 37th minute. The midfielder received a pass from captain James Tavernier and drilled a low shot from the edge of the box into the far corner. The visitors then took the lead four minutes into the second half through Pröpper, whose deflected effort from inside the area left Dundee United goalkeeper Jack Walton with no chance.
Dessers sealed the victory for Rangers in the 86th minute with a superb finish, latching onto a pass from Zak Lovelace and firing past Walton. The Nigerian striker, who had also scored in Rangers’ midweek Europa League clash, continued his fine form. However, the match ended on a sour note for Rangers as Diomande was sent off in added time following a controversial incident involving Dundee United defender Kevin Holt.
The win moves Rangers to within 10 points of league leaders Celtic, who have a game in hand after their weekend fixture was postponed due to storm damage. Dundee United, meanwhile, remain in third place but missed the opportunity to close the gap on the top two.
