November 02, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich suffered a major upset last night, crashing out of the DFB-Pokal cup in the second round after a 2-1 defeat to third-tier side, FC Saarbrücken.
The Bundesliga champions took an early lead through Thomas Müller’s 16th minute strike. However, the minnows staged a remarkable comeback, equalising through Patrick Sontheimer just before half-time. Despite dominating the second half, Bayern failed to capitalise on their chances. Saarbrücken landed the killer blow in the 96th minute, with substitute Marcel Gaus slotting home to dump the cup holders out.
Bayern boss, Thomas Tuchel, made five changes from the side that thrashed Darmstadt 8-0 on the weekend. However, his rotational policy backfired, with the Bavarian giants failing to break down their lower league opponents. Tuchel was also forced into an early change after Matthijs de Ligt limped off with a knee injury.
The defeat ends Bayern’s hopes of a domestic double this season. It also provides a huge boost to Saarbrücken, who become the first fourth-tier side in Pokal history to beat the record champions.
The cup has provided a few upsets already this term. Borussia Dortmund were eliminated by third division SV Darmstadt 98 in the first round. Still, Bayern’s loss surely tops them all, and Tuchel will have some tough questions to answer after this embarrassing result.
