October 2, (THEWILL) – With a commanding 6-3 6-4 victory over Marin Cilic, Novak Djokovic took home the Tel Aviv Open trophy after playing some of his finest games this year.
In the ATP 250 indoor hard court event, Djokovic won all three of his sets against Pablo Andujar, Vasek Pospisil, and Roman Safiullin to get to the final for the 35-year-old’s third ATP Tour-level championship of the year and the 89th overall of his career.
With his performance from the back of the court, Djokovic unavoidably put Cilic’s serve in jeopardy, and he controlled his own service games after his opening serve so that he did not encounter a breakpoint in the opening set.
He only ran into difficulties at deuce, to which he gave a pair of aces in return. After an hour and 35 minutes, the Serbian, who was as at ease as ever, claimed victory. And, since he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas to win the Italian Open and Nick Kyrgios to win Wimbledon earlier in the year, Djokovic is now the first man to win a title on hard, clay, and grass courts this season.
THEWILL recalls that Djokovic did not contest the US Open earlier this year after being denied entry to the country because of his refusal to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
