February 26, (THEWILL) – In an emotionally charged contest at the Los Angeles Lakers’ home arena, Luka Dončić recorded his first triple-double since joining the team, finishing with 19 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists in a 107-99 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. The win improved the Lakers’ record to 35-21, placing them fourth in the Western Conference standings, whilst Dallas fell to 31-28, currently ninth in the conference.
The atmosphere was electric both inside and outside the venue, with fans donning Dončić’s number 77 Lakers and Slovenia jerseys lining the tunnel to greet him during his pregame routine. “The closure is going to take a while, I think,” Dončić stated following the game. “It was a lot of emotions and not much sleep. It was a different game. Sometimes I did not know what I was doing.”
LeBron James contributed significantly with 27 points and 12 rebounds, including 16 points in the decisive fourth quarter when he formed an effective partnership with Dončić. Austin Reaves added 20 points and five assists for Los Angeles, who outscored the Mavericks 11-5 during the final 3:15 of the contest to pull away for the win.
For Dallas, Kyrie Irving led all scorers with 35 points whilst adding seven rebounds, and Klay Thompson contributed 22 points and eight rebounds in the losing effort. Mavericks coach Jason Kidd praised his team’s determination despite the result: “We put ourselves in a position but came up short. I thought the guys fought. We were down 16, but we did not let go of the rope.”
The Lakers honoured Anthony Davis, who was traded to Dallas in the February 1st deal that brought Dončić to Los Angeles, with a video tribute during the first timeout. Davis, currently sidelined with an abdominal injury, was present for the occasion, witnessing his former teammate James score seven of nine points down the stretch to help seal the victory.
