January 13, (THEWILL) – Hans-Joachim Watzke has dismissed suggestions that returning winger Jadon Sancho will prove difficult to manage, insisting the England international “has no problems with discipline”. Sancho sealed a dramatic loan move back to Borussia Dortmund from Manchester United and will remain until the end of the 2023/2024 season.
The 23-year-old found first-team opportunities hard to come by at Old Trafford this season after a falling out with manager Erik ten Hag. However, Dortmund CEO Watzke told Sky Germany: “Jadon has no problem with discipline, I don’t know who thought that up.” While admitting Sancho can occasionally be late, Watzke felt some journalists had unfairly compared him to former Dortmund forward, Ousmane Dembele.
Sancho returns to familiar surroundings having initially left BVB for United in a £73 million transfer in 2021. Dortmund manager Edin Terzic suggested the winger could feature against Darmstadt on Saturday, just 48 hours after securing his loan switch. The deal sees Sancho reunited with the club where he established himself as one of Europe’s hottest prospects between 2017-2021.
Watzke retains faith in Sancho’s talent, praising the England international as “a friend of the ball”. Dortmund will hope Sancho can rediscover his best form in a bid to help their push for a return to the Champions League next season. They currently sit 6th in the Bundesliga, six points adrift of the top four places.
During his first spell at Dortmund, Sancho won the German Cup before departing for Manchester. Both club and player will now be hoping his temporary return can bring further success.
