May 22, (THEWILL) – In a bid to ensure a highly competitive pre-season tournament, the Dozy Mmobuosi Foundation has made a significant announcement regarding the number of participating teams in the upcoming 2023 edition of the Dozy Mmobuosi/NPFL Pre-season Super Cup.
The Foundation, known for its commitment to promoting football excellence, stated that the decision to trim the number of teams was a challenging yet crucial step towards maintaining the tournament’s high standards and intensity. Acknowledging the anticipation and enthusiasm surrounding the previously announced number of teams, the Dozy Mmobuosi Foundation expressed its understanding of potential disappointment.
However, CEO of the Foundation, Ebuwa Martins Agbonwaneten, emphasised that the adjustment was necessary to ensure a more concentrated display of skill and heightened competition among the top teams, ultimately enhancing the fan experience. The foundation’s priority remains to deliver a thrilling and unforgettable Super Cup while contributing to the development of football infrastructure.
By reducing the number of participating teams from 12 to eight, the tournament sponsor aims to encourage fierce competition in the regular season, as only the best teams will earn a spot in the prestigious Super Cup. A total of 20 teams in the NPFL, including 12 in the Super Cup, would exceed the halfway mark and potentially impact the overall competitiveness. The foundation believes that allowing only the top 8 teams, based on their performance in the preceding NPFL season, ensures that each qualifying team showcases the highest level of skill and performance, elevating the standard of the Super Cup and NPFL as a whole.
As the Dozy Mmobuosi Foundation makes these adjustments, it has reassured all stakeholders of its unwavering commitment to maintaining the integrity of the Super Cup and meeting the expectations of players, fans, and the football community.
