August 11, (THEWILL) – In order to book a slot in the third round of the Canadian Open, Jack Draper defeated third seed, Stefanos Tsitsipas, in straight sets as the precursor to the US Open continue to create upsets.
The British qualifier defeated the fifth ranked player in the world, 7-5, 7-6, to advance in Montreal and earn his first victory over a player ranked in the top 10. In the third game of the first set, Draper broke to take the lead, and in the Greek’s subsequent service game, he nearly completed a double break.
Draper’s momentum was broken in the following game as Tsitsipas was able to hold and come back to tie the score at 3-3. But, Draper persevered and eventually secured the second break for a 6-5 advantage before serving out the set.
Both players saved break points on their opening service games in the second set, which got off to a tense start. The 20-year-old Londoner had to dig deep to save three break points in order to keep the score at 3-3. As the tie-break for the set began, Tsitsipas’ errant forehand on the deciding point gave Draper the advantage and he took it to get the win.
Gael Monfils, who fought admirably to defeat Maxime Cressy 7-6, 7-6 after a protracted struggle, is the next hurdle for Draper at the Open
