Sarah Ogoke

March 17, (THEWILL) — Nigeria’s D’Tigress captain Sarah Ogoke has retired from the national women’s basketball team after 15 years of international service, closing the most decorated individual career in African women’s basketball history.

The 35-year-old shooting guard is the only player on the continent to have won five consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket titles, completing that run at the 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2025 editions.

She also appeared for Nigeria at the 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Spain and collected medals at the 2011 and 2015 African Games.

Off the court, Ogoke maintained a parallel career in podiatric surgery, specialising in foot and ankle conditions.

She routinely used annual leave from hospital duties to attend national team camps, once telling reporters: “My job is waiting for me when I go back.”

Her appearance at the 2025 AfroBasket in Ivory Coast ranked among the most extraordinary chapters of her career.

Having missed the 2024 Paris Olympics due to pregnancy and the death of her father, she returned within months to help D’Tigress claim a fifth straight continental crown.

A widely shared video captured her breastfeeding her newborn son in the dressing room immediately after the final victory over Mali.

Ogoke credited her time in medical school for shaping the discipline that defined her sporting life.

She said, “The four years that I spent in medical school, I learnt how to work diligently and steadily on a specific skill set over the course of a long period of time.

“That can be translated to the skills necessary to be successful in basketball.”

D’Tigress, already qualified for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, now enter a new cycle without their longest-serving captain.
