February 27, (THEWILL) – Manchester United and England goalkeeper, Mary Earps, has been named Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper for 2022, in recognition of her outstanding performances over the past year.
The 29-year-old established herself as England’s number one during the latter stages of 2021 and conceded only twice in seven games as the Lionesses won Euro 2022 on home soil. She has also been a key figure for Manchester United, helping to underpin the team’s defensive strength.
Earps beat Lyon’s Christiane Endler and Chelsea’s Ann-Katrin Berger to the prize, becoming the first English player to be nominated as a finalist for the FIFA women’s goalkeeper award. On receiving the award, Earps thanked her loved ones, teammates, and coaching staff at both Manchester United and England.
The goalkeeper also dedicated the award to anyone who has been in a dark place, saying that it shows that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Off the pitch, Earps gained viral notoriety for her post-match celebrations after England beat Germany in the Euro 2022 final. As the Lionesses crashed Sarina Wiegman’s press conference, Earps danced her way onto the top of the desk.
On the pitch, she has become known for her incredible shot-stopping and command of her penalty area, always shouting instructions to the defenders in front of her.
