Nancy, as she was also called, was the inspiration behind Ed Sheeran’s hit song, ‘Nancy Mulligan’, from his 2017 album ‘Divide’.

The story behind the song is about Ed Sheeran’s late grandfather, William Sheeran, from Belfast in Northern Ireland, and Nancy, a Catholic from the Republic of Ireland.

They fell in love during the Second World War and got married at the Wexford border.

“‘They got engaged and no one turned up at their wedding,” Ed Sheeran said.

Nancy and William had eight children and 23 grandchildren.

The singer who has been battling the lawsuit, will also deal with coping with the loss of a member of his family.
