December 18, (THEWILL) – Manchester United’s Edinson Cavani is alleged to have turned down signing for Argentine side Boca Juniors in favour of a move to Catalan giants Barcelona.

Since joining United in 2020, the Uruguayan international has been praised for his significant contributions and crucial goals, but injury issues have limited his availability, and he is now expected to leave in January.

Sergio Aguero’s unexpected retirement has left Barca short on strikers, and the Blaugrana are reportedly considering offering the former Napoli star an 18-month contract to join the rejuvenation project that Xavi Hernandez is working on at Camp Nou.

According to TYC Sports, Boca Juniors, the current Primera Division champions who are 13 points behind River Plate this season, are being overlooked in part due to Cavani’s desire to continue playing in Europe’s top championships.

If he joins Barça from Manchester, he will be joining a Catalan team that is far behind the leaders in the La Liga title chase. Xavi’s team is now in eighth place in Spain’s top division, 18 points behind champions Real Madrid, and faces a tough fight to qualify for the Champions League.

To worsen matters, Barca was eliminated from Europe’s top club competition at the group stage and relegated to the Europa this season, finishing third after defeats to Bayern Munich and Benfica. Barca will meet Victor Osimhen’s Napoli in the knockout round playoffs for a place in the final 16 of that competition.
