April 22, (THEWILL) — The Presidency on Wednesday clarified that former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and former Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, voluntarily resigned from their positions, dispelling speculations that they were dismissed from office.
THEWILL earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday approved a minor cabinet reshuffle within the Federal Executive Council (FEC), affecting changes in the nation’s economic and housing leadership as part of efforts to strengthen governance and improve service delivery.
A statement signed by Yomi Odunuga, Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, disclosed that Wale Edun who exited his position as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, was directed to hand over to Taiwo Oyedele, who was elevated to assume the role.
Also, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa who exited the cabinet as Minister of Housing and Urban Development, was directed to hand over to the Minister of State in the ministry pending the confirmation of Mr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma, who has been named ministerial nominee and Minister-designate for the Housing and Urban Development Ministry.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency emphasised that both men stepped down of their own accord, underscoring President Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to transparency and due process in governance.
According to the statement, Edun tendered his resignation to the President on health grounds after recently marking his 70th birthday.
The seasoned economist formally submitted his resignation letter on Monday, expressing gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve in his administration.
“It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda. Under your leadership, Nigeria has emerged stronger, more resilient, and more internationally respected. I wish you and the administration every success in the future,” Edun wrote.
Before the official announcement of his departure, Edun paid a valedictory visit to the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where both leaders held an extensive meeting reviewing the state of the economy and key reform milestones.
He subsequently stepped aside to focus on his health and private sector engagements.
Similarly, Dangiwa resigned from his role as Minister of Housing and Urban Development, expressing appreciation to President Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him.
His tenure saw efforts to deepen access to affordable housing and strengthen the institutional capacity of the housing sector.
Edun’s exit marks the close of a distinguished public service career spanning decades in both national and international finance.
He previously served as Commissioner for Finance in Lagos State between 1999 and 2004 and built a formidable career in banking and investment, including roles at the World Bank and as a co-founder of Stanbic IBTC, as well as founder of Chapelhill Denham Group.
An accomplished architect and administrator, Dangiwa previously served as Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria from 2015 to 2022, where he championed mortgage reforms aimed at expanding home ownership opportunities.
He also served as Secretary to the Katsina State Government before his ministerial appointment in August 2023.
President Tinubu, while accepting their resignations, commended both former ministers for their dedication and significant contributions to the administration’s reform agenda.
He noted that their service helped advance economic stability and housing sector development under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The President wished them continued success in their future endeavours and good health, acknowledging their roles in strengthening governance and public sector delivery.
Meanwhile, in line with efforts to sustain reform momentum, the President has directed the new Minister of Finance, Oyedele, to consolidate ongoing fiscal and economic reforms with renewed vigour, discipline, and innovation.
