February 28, (THEWILL) –Â Liverpool won their first domestic trophy of the season on Sunday, defeating Chelsea in a tight penalty shootout at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final, but the amount of prize money that will be heading to Anfield as a result of that victory was surprisingly meagre.
While winning the FA Cup is extremely profitable with the prize pool for this season’s final being £1.8 million, Premier League clubs may win £1.6 million in cash awards before ever participating in the final, which will be staged at Wembley on Saturday 14 May.
However, the Carabao Cup has a far smaller prize pool – just £200,000 in total.
The League Cup does not have any prize money until the later stages, with the £200,000 pot going to the four teams that make it to the semi-finals.
Arsenal and Tottenham, the losing semi-finalists, received £25,000, while Chelsea, the runners-up, received £50,000. That means Liverpool will collect the remaining £100,000 from the fund.
On the surface, it is not a great windfall for the Reds, and the trophy will be more crucial. However, in terms of finances, every little bit helps.
Liverpool’s financial accounts for the 2020/21 season were just disclosed. They claimed a £4.8 million loss for the campaign, which was still hampered by the debilitating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was, however, a significantly smaller deficit than the £46.3 million reported in the 2019/2020 season.
