April 19, (THEWILL)- The English Football League (EFL), has hit out at the decision to scrap FA Cup replays from the first round onwards, claiming it is further evidence of the league and its clubs being sidelined.
On Thursday, the England Football Association announced a new agreement with the English Premier League regarding the FA Cup’s format and funding. This agreement includes abolishing replays in the early stages of the competition.
Several EFL clubs voiced their disapproval of the changes, insisting they were not consulted in the decision-making process. The FA responded with a statement acknowledging these concerns and promising to share details on how lost revenue from scrapped replays might be compensated.
However, the EFL views this as merely the latest example of marginalisation. The league also highlighted the EPL’s decision to halt discussions regarding a new financial agreement with the EFL.
“This recent agreement between the Premier League and the FA, without financial reform, simply reinforces how EFL clubs are being disregarded in favour of others higher in the pyramid”, the EFL’s statement read. “This approach threatens the future of English football as a whole. The EFL urges both the Premier League and the FA to reconsider their partnership with the EFL and engage in more collaborative discussions on issues impacting our clubs directly.”
