March 28, (THEWILL) – Egypt made a giant stride toward qualification for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations with a convincing 4-0 win over Malawi, at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
Goals from Tarek Hamed, Omar Marmoush, Mohamed Salah, and Zizo completed a comprehensive double for the Pharaohs over the Flames. The victory sees them rise to the top of Group E, level on nine points with Guinea.
The Pharaohs took the lead as early as the fourth minute, with Hamed finding the net with a powerful drive. Marmoush doubled Egypt’s advantage before Salah exchanged passes with Mostafa Mohamed and scored a left-footed shot to make it 3-0. Zizo scored the fourth goal in the 50th minute, and Egypt cruised to a comfortable pace in the remainder of the game with little effort.
The victory puts Egypt on the verge of qualifying for the finals in Ivory Coast in 2024. Both the Pharaohs and Guinea are now the clear favourites to book two berths at the finals, while Malawi and Ethiopia have three points apiece in third and fourth.
The teams will resume their qualification campaign in June, with Malawi away to Ethiopia and Egypt visiting Guinea.
