May 25, (THEWILL) – Egyptian midfielder, Mohamed Elneny, regarded as the “Pyramid Pirlo” by a section of the Arsenal fanbase, has extended his contract with the Gunners until the end of the 2022/2023 campaign.
Elneny’s previous contract was supposed to expire at the end of June, but he fought his way into reckoning and into manager Mikel Arteta’s plans in recent months. A new contract was only fair and comes as a reward for his steadfastness whenever needed.
After Arsenal’s 5-1 win over Everton on Sunday, Elneny was seen actually putting pen to paper, and the Gunners confirmed the deal on Wednesday morning saying: “Midfielder Mohamed Elneny is extending his stay with us. Mo, 29, has been a key member of the squad since joining us from Basel in 2016.”
Speaking about the new deal with the club’s website, the Egyptian said: “I love this club and I feel like part of this family. I want to continue at this amazing club and amazing family and I’m very happy and very excited for the future.”
Arteta and Technical Director Edu also commented. Arteta said: Manager Mikel Arteta said: “Mo is a really important part of the team. He brings endless energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the team and is loved by everyone. He’s an important player for us on and off the pitch, a real role model to our younger players and I’m delighted he’s staying.”
Edu added: “Mo has an incredible mentality which is so important for our squad. He helps the team as much as he can every day. We are all very happy to have him with us as we look to build on what has been achieved this season.”
