October 13, (THEWILL) – At the World Cup qualifier featuring England and Hungary at the Wembley Stadium, there were conflicts between police and Hungary fans.
Following the fan violence that marred the Euro 2020 final between Italy and England in July, police presence was enhanced in and around Wembley, but problems began within 10 minutes.
Away supporters were spotted fighting with stewards and eventually with the police. ITV footage appeared to show travelling Hungarian fans assaulting police, who appeared to retire to the concourse moments later after using batons to try to drive fans back into their permitted area within the stadium.
After attempting to arrest a fan for a racially aggravated public order offence, police confirmed that conflict had erupted.
“Shortly after the start of tonight’s match at Wembley, officers entered the stand to arrest a spectator for a racially aggravated public order offence following comments made towards a steward,” said the Metropolitan Police in a statement.
“As the officers made the arrest, minor disorder broke out involving other spectators. Order was quickly restored and there have been no further incidents at this stage.”
The incident dominated the first ten minutes of the game, prompting the FA to launch an investigation.
“We are aware of an incident in the away section during tonight’s Fifa 2022 World Cup Qualifier at Wembley Stadium. We will be investigating and will report the incident to FIFA.”
THEWILL recalls that FIFA ordered Hungary to play two games behind closed doors after England players were subjected to racial abuse during the reverse match.
