January 19, (THEWILL) – After this weekend’s matches, the Premier League is willing to revisit its rules on postponing matches.
Following weeks of debate over rescheduled matches, it is expected that a Premier League meeting will be convened after the next round of fixtures to consider how the regulations should be amended.
The Premier League enters a short winter break until February 8 following this round of games, the 23rd round of the season.
The two-and-a-half-week pause is expected to provide enough time for the new rules to be decided and implemented.
On Wednesday, the league issued the following statement: “The Premier League is consulting with our clubs regarding COVID-19 postponement rules and guidance in light of the changing national picture and the falling number of cases within our squads.
“The league’s current guidance was amended in December following the emergence of the new Omicron variant and we continue to monitor the ongoing effects of the virus and will update our guidance accordingly.”
The present set of rules has sparked a lot of debate, and 21 matches have already been postponed so far.
As things presently stand, these rules state that if one of the sides does not have 13 eligible outfield players and one goalie “either from its squad list or its appropriately experienced Under-21 players,” the match shall be postponed.
