June 17, (THEWILL) – Equatorial Guinea have secured their place in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, Cote d’Ivoire 2023, after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Tunisia, on Saturday.
This victory ensured Equatorial Guinea’s qualification, joining Tunisia, who had already secured their place in the prestigious tournament. The match, held at the Malabo stadium, saw limited scoring opportunities in the first half but tensions rose in the second half with a scrappy affair and a few set pieces injecting some excitement into the game.
Equatorial Guinean captain, Emilio Nsue, proved to be the hero, converting a penalty in the 85th minute, exacting revenge for their previous 4-0 defeat against Tunisia.
In the other Group J game played on Saturday, Botswana celebrated their first win of the qualifying campaign with a 1-0 victory over Libya at the Francistown Stadium. Gape Mohutsiwa scored the only goal of the match just before half-time, granting Botswana a leapfrog over their opponents and securing a third-place spot in the group. However, both Botswana and Libya have no chance of qualifying for the upcoming competition in Cote d’Ivoire.
