February 13, (THEWILL) – Ethiopian Ulfata Deresa Geleta has won the 42-kilometer Lagos City Marathon this year. On Saturday morning, the North African raced through some highways in Nigeria’s commercial metropolis, beating out a large number of competitors to win the prize.
After 2 hours 11 minutes and 54 seconds, he crossed the finish line ahead of the chasing throng. The ultimate prize for the winner of the 42km race was set at $30,000, according to the competition’s organisers.
The Lagos City Marathon in 2022 is the eighth in the state’s marathon series. Participants gathered at the National Stadium’s entrance in Surulere very early to begin the 42km marathon.
They ran through the Ahmadu Bello Way in Victoria Island all the way to Eko Atlantic City. Expectedly, not everyone who started finished.
The 10km runners, on the other hand, began their race at Lekki Phase 1 and raced to the Eko Atlantic City finish line. Shortly after the race, Geleta was presented with a cheque for $30,000 as the winner the 42km race.
David Barmasai, Kenya’s first runner-up, got a cash prize of $20,000 for finishing the 42-kilometer race in 2 hours, 13 minutes, and 33 seconds.
