March 28, (THEWILL) – The Netherlands secured a 3-0 win over 10-man Gibraltar in a Euro 2024 qualifier on Monday, with Nathan Ake scoring twice and Memphis Depay also getting on the scoresheet.
Making 48 attempts at goal aside, the hosts struggled to convert these chances into goals and showed little of the sharpness that coach Ronald Koeman had been looking for after being thrashed 4-0 by France last week.
Depay opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a header, but Gibraltar’s determined defending prevented the Dutch from scoring further goals in the first half. The introduction of Cody Gakpo and Donyell Malan at halftime added more firepower to the Dutch attack, and Ake made it 2-0 in the 50th minute.
Gibraltar was reduced to 10 men when Liam Walker was sent off one minute later for a studs-up tackle on Mats Wieffer. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Gibraltar remained resilient and held the Dutch at bay until the 82nd minute when Ake’s shot from just inside the area deflected off John Sergeant to make it 3-0.
The result means that France leads Group B with six points, while Greece and the Netherlands have three points each
