November 24, (THEWILL) – A group of passionate Everton fans gathered outside the English Premier League’s offices in London on Friday, to protest the “draconian” 10-point deduction handed to the club for breaching financial rules.
The Toffees exceeded losses permitted under profitability and sustainability regulations by £19.5 million from 2019-2022, prompting outrage from supporters over the harsh punishment.
“It feels like the rules were deliberately vague to allow this type of situation,” said 36-year-old lifelong fan Paul. “Everton’s been targeted because of threats of an independent regulator. It feels wrong.” The points deduction leaves Everton 19th, just above the relegation zone.
However, fans insist the club will avoid demotion. “There’s too much fight and heart there,” said 28-year-old Amy Panayi. Manager Sean Dyche called the penalty “disproportionate” last week. Fans echoed this view, questioning whether bigger clubs would receive similar sanctions.
“I doubt other clubs will get points deductions like this or the same treatment,” said 46-year-old Alan Newton. A reduced penalty is expected on appeal, which could set a precedent. The protest comes ahead of a clash against Manchester United on Sunday.
