November 26, (THEWILL) – A throng of livid Everton fans congregated on Sunday, outside Goodison Park ahead of their match versus Manchester United, marching through the streets in outrage over what they deemed an unjust 10-point deduction levied against their club.
The Toffees were slammed last week with heavy sanctions after being found in breach of profit and sustainability regulations – having exceeded permitted losses by £19.5 million over three seasons ending 2021/2022. Though expected to appeal, Everton supporters saw the punishment as disproportionate and corrupt.
Carrying massive banners decrying “greed and money” in football’s upper echelons, protesters gathered first at The Brick pub before proceeding vociferously to the stadium. Fans group, The1878s, handed out thousands of tiny purple “Corrupt” placards, waved furiously by most supporters.
Boos and anti-EPL chants rang out as the tie against United began, with fans standing in unison 10 minutes in to display their placards and vent their frustrations. New manager Sean Dyche echoed supporters’ shock, having called the points deduction “disproportionate” just days before.
Last Friday, Evertonians protested outside Premier League HQ in Paddington as well, making clear their indignation at what they see as profoundly unjust treatment. With rancour high amongst supporters, the club’s appeal against the punishment takes on heightened importance.
