November 28, (THEWILL) — Everton manager, David Moyes, confirmed on Friday that the club’s appeal against Idrissa Gueye’s red card has been unsuccessful. The 36-year-old Senegal midfielder was dismissed in the 13th minute of Monday’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford following an altercation in which he slapped teammate, Michael Keane.
The dismissal forced Everton to play most of the match with 10 men, yet Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s 29th-minute strike earned them a historic win. The Merseyside side became the first team to triumph at Old Trafford in the English Premier League after losing a player to a red card. Gueye will now miss three league fixtures against Newcastle United, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest.
Moyes told reporters that the appeal was rejected without explanation. “We have appealed and our appeal was turned down. We have not been given any reason why it was turned down, but we did appeal it – immediately”, he said. The manager added that the matter was resolved quickly within the dressing room.
The incident marked only the third time in EPL history that a player has been sent off for a confrontation with a teammate. The last such occurrence was in 2008 when Stoke City’s Ricardo Fuller slapped Andy Griffin during a match at West Ham United. Moyes later said Gueye had apologised, and the midfielder also issued a public apology via social media.
Everton currently sit 11th in the table with 18 points from 12 matches. Moyes said the club wants passion from its players, though not necessarily in the manner displayed on Monday evening.
