June 19, (THEWILL) – Former Netherlands international footballer, Quincy Promes, has been sentenced to 18 months in jail by a Dutch court after being found guilty of stabbing his cousin at a family party.
The 31-year-old Spartak Moscow forward, who currently resides in Russia, was not present at the sentencing in Amsterdam. The court determined that Promes stabbed his cousin in the leg during a dispute over a stolen necklace at the conclusion of a birthday celebration in 2020. The court cited Promes’ public profile as a professional football player and prominent figure in Dutch society as a contributing factor to the heavier sentence.
In a statement, the court criticised Promes for not taking responsibility for his actions. Although prosecutors initially charged Promes with attempted murder, they dropped the charge last year. The investigation into the stabbing incident was triggered by a phone tap from a separate drug-smuggling probe involving Promes, who was charged in May with importing a significant quantity of cocaine through the Belgian port of Antwerp in 2020.
Promes, who has earned 50 caps for the Netherlands national team and scored seven goals, last represented the national team at the Euro 2020 championships, which took place in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He transferred from Sevilla to Amsterdam’s Ajax in 2019 for a fee of €15 million before returning to Spartak in 2021, where he was named Russia’s Footballer of the Year in 2017 during a previous stint.
