October 11, (THEWILL) – Former Liverpool defender, Joel Matip, retires from professional football at age 33, following an illustrious career spanning nearly two decades. The Cameroonian international made this decision after his departure from Liverpool FC, where his contract concluded in 2024.
The experienced centre-back sustained a significant knee injury in December 2023, which resulted in his absence from Liverpool’s final campaign under Jurgen Klopp. Despite interest from several elite clubs, including Italian giants, Juventus and Roma, along with his former club, Schalke, Matip opted to conclude his professional career.
During his eight-year tenure at Liverpool (2016-2024), Matip established himself among the English Premier League’s most reliable defenders. His trophy cabinet includes the EPL, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, and multiple domestic cups. Prior to his time in England, he achieved success in Germany, winning both the DFL-Supercup and DFB-Pokal.
