May 17, (THEWILL) – Former Manchester United Executive Vice-Chairman, Ed Woodward, has taken on his first role since leaving the club in 2022.
Woodward has joined eSports company EStars as a non-executive director, focusing on utilising eSports for educational purposes in the Middle East. This marks his return to the professional sphere following a 16-year tenure at Old Trafford, which was met with mixed reviews.
During his time at Manchester United, Woodward faced criticism for presiding over the club’s longest trophy drought since the mid-1980s. In this new role, Woodward joins a team that includes former Newcastle United goalkeeper, Tim Krul. EStars aims to take advantage of the fusion of eSports and education in the dynamic Middle Eastern region, where curriculum decisions can be implemented quickly.
Woodward expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating: “Joining the team is an easy decision when you add the exceptional leadership and entrepreneurial energy of Mags. I’m excited about EStars delivering a path of learning for the next generation in the (relatively) new industry of esports.”
Following Woodward’s departure, Richard Arnold assumed the role of CEO at Manchester United, transitioning from his previous position as Managing Director. The announcement of Woodward’s involvement with EStars reflects his interest in exploring new ventures within the rapidly expanding eSports landscape.
