JUne 04, (THEWILL) – Six top teams from the NPFL clashed in a thrilling display of football on the opening day of the Super 6 tournament, setting the stage for four more intense match days ahead.
The matches witnessed a total of five goals, averaging over 1.6 goals per game. Enyimba vs Remo Stars stole the show with a captivating four-goal thriller, making it the match of the day. However, the initial half of the games lacked excitement and failed to inspire, leaving spectators longing for more. The second half, though, lived up to the pre-match expectations, delivering a pulsating spectacle.
The NPFL Super 6 kickoff was marked by several controversial moments, highlighting the need for the implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). Enyimba and Remo Stars’ clash particularly showcased the contentious nature of some decisions. While Adiele Eriugo’s opener for Enyimba was brilliantly executed, the remaining four goals scored in the match sparked controversy. Remo Stars’ equaliser by super-sub, Junior Lokosa and Emeka Obioma’s penalty, which restored Enyimba’s lead, were surrounded by debate regarding their validity.
The application of VAR could have rectified these contentious calls, ensuring a fair outcome. However, one standout aspect of the games was the tactical decisions made by the teams’ managers. Remo Stars’ coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, made a crucial blunder by substituting Ifeanyi Anaemena, who had brilliantly handled Enyimba’s Emeka Obioma in the first half. The change from a back three to a back four backfired as Anaemena’s replacement, Adams Olamilekan, left the defence vulnerable.
Obioma benefited from the newfound space and created significant chances for Enyimba. However, Ogunmodede redeemed himself by introducing Junior Lokosa after falling behind, resulting in an immediate impact, as Lokosa levelled the scores with a typical poacher’s goal. Ogunmodede’s later decisions, therefore, proved influential in the outcome of the match.
