Dutch Grand Prix

December 04, (THEWILL) – The Formula One World Championship will bid farewell to the Netherlands’ premier motorsport event after the 2026 season, with organisers confirming a final one-year extension for the Zandvoort circuit. The announcement marks the end of a significant chapter for the race that has been intrinsically linked with local hero Max Verstappen’s racing career.

Formula One Chief Executive, Stefano Domenicali, praised the event’s impact, highlighting its remarkable contribution to European motorsport entertainment. The race will transition to a sprint weekend format for its concluding year, providing fans with an innovative final celebration of the Dutch Grand Prix’s legacy. This decision comes amid a record 24-race calendar, with the sport exploring potential rotations for future European locations.

Dutch Grand Prix director, Robert van Overdijk, emphasised the strategic reasoning behind the conclusion, stating that the organisation wanted to conclude operations while maintaining peak popularity and fan support. The circuit has been a sold-out venue since its return in 2021, creating an electric atmosphere for the passionate Orange Army of supporters who have consistently championed their national racing talent.

Verstappen, the four-time world champion, experienced a rare non-victory at the circuit in the most recent event, with McLaren’s Lando Norris claiming the top spot. The impending departure leaves questions about future opportunities for Dutch representation in the international racing calendar, potentially opening doors for other European or global circuits.

F1 continues to evaluate its global presence, with potential interests in expanding to new markets, including an anticipated African round. European circuits such as Barcelona, Spa, and Imola are being considered for potential rotation.
