October 07, (THEWILL) – Formula One’s governing body has introduced an additional 10-minute practice session ahead of Saturday’s potentially title-deciding sprint race in Qatar. The session will allow drivers to adjust to changes in track limits at turns 12 and 13.
The sprint shootout, which determines the grid for Sunday’s main grand prix, will now start 20 minutes later than originally scheduled. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen only needs to finish in the top three to secure his third drivers’ championship.
Further tyre analysis will take place after the sprint to decide if extra precautions are necessary for Sunday’s race. Teams may be ordered to limit stints on new tyres to 20 laps, rising to 22 laps for used rubber, to account for in-and-out-laps during qualifying.
All drivers could also be required to make at least three pitstops to change tyres. The directives follow reviews by F1 tyre supplier, Pirelli, which found sidewall separations on many tyres used for around 20 laps during Friday practice.
The FIA believes the issue is likely caused by contact between tyres and high kerbs at the circuit, with drivers riding kerbs aggressively to gain time. Limiting stints aims to prevent further tyre failures and potential safety issues.
