November 18, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been handed a seven-match domestic suspension by the Football Association following a controversial media interview. The sanctions stem from comments made during an Uruguayan television programme in June, where Bentancur allegedly made a racist remark about his teammate Heung-Min Son.
The independent regulatory commission found Bentancur guilty of an “aggravated breach” under FA Rule E3, specifically related to comments referencing race and nationality. During the Canal 10 interview, when asked to show a shirt, Bentancur reportedly stated, “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same”, which triggered the formal investigation and subsequent disciplinary action.
An official FA statement detailed the punishment, confirming a seven-match suspension and a £100,000 fine. The ruling means Bentancur will miss seven domestic fixtures but remains eligible for European competitions, including upcoming UEFA Europa League matches against Roma and Rangers. The midfielder had initially denied the charge but was found proven by the independent commission.
Despite the serious allegations, Tottenham captain Heung-Min Son publicly supported Bentancur, stating they remained “brothers” and that “nothing had changed” after the Uruguayan’s immediate apology. Bentancur acknowledged making a mistake and apologised swiftly after the incident became public.
The match suspension will commence immediately, with Tottenham set to face Manchester City on Saturday, November 23.
