May 18, (THEWILL) – Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, has been hit with a two-game touchline ban and a £75,000 fine by the England Football Association (FA) in response to his remarks about referee, Paul Tierney, following Liverpool’s 4-3 victory over Tottenham in April.
Klopp engaged in a heated exchange with the official during the match and later alleged that Tierney had made inappropriate comments. However, after reviewing the audio of the interaction, the FA strongly refuted any claims of misconduct on the part of the referee. Klopp further accused Tierney of harbouring personal animosity towards Liverpool, citing a history between the club and the official.
In light of the investigation initiated by the FA, the governing body has now imposed a two-game touchline suspension on Klopp. A statement from the FA clarified the disciplinary action, stating: “Jurgen Klopp has been suspended from the touchline for two matches and fined £75,000 following media comments that he made after Liverpool’s Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday 30 April 2023.”
The statement also specified that the first match of the ban will take immediate effect, while the second will be suspended until the conclusion of the 2023/2024 season, provided no further violations of FA Rule E3 occur in the meantime.
Consequently, Klopp will be absent from the touchline for Liverpool’s last home game of the season against Aston Villa this Saturday. However, the suspended nature of the second game of the ban means that Klopp will be permitted to lead the team in their season finale clash with Southampton.
