January 11, (THEWILL) – Ahmet Calik, a defender with Turkey’s Konyaspor and the national team, has died in an automobile accident at the age of 27.

Calik, who made eight appearances for Turkey, was killed in a car accident on a highway near Ankara, Turkey’s capital. According to Turkish reports, he was the only one in the vehicle.

In an official statement, Konyaspor said: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our football player Ahmet Calik, who has won the love of our fans and our city since the first day he came to Konyaspor.

“Condolences to all of us, especially to the family of our football player Ahmet Calik.”

Calik had been a part of Konyaspor’s 1-0 loss to Sivasspor on Sunday. During his 11-year senior career, he also played for Galatasaray and Genclerbirligi.

A statement from Galatasaray read: “It is with deep sadness that we learned of the death of our former football player Ahmet Calik.

“May God have mercy on the deceased, we express our condolences to his grieving family, loved ones and Turkish sports community.”
