SAN FRANCISCO, September 17, (THEWILL) – A bomb blast has occurred at the Federal College of Education in Kano, northern Nigerian.
Witnesses told THEWILL that gunshots were also fired at the institution.
Casualty figures are unclear as at press time but witnesses said many students have been feared killed and that sporadic gunfire could still be heard within and around the college.
THEWILL understands that troops have arrived the college.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Adenrele Shinaba told reporters that at least 15 students and two armed gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram, were killed, while 47 persons were wounded at the college located in the Kabuga area of Kano. He said two suicide bombers detonated their IEDs, on in a classroom and the other outside the classroom.
“Some unidentified people climbed the fence of the Federal College and jumped into the school premises, where they started shooting sporadically to scare the students. One of the two suicide bombers gained entrance into one of the classrooms and set himself ablaze, killing 15 of the students,” he said.
PRESIDENT JONATHAN ASSURES RESIDENTS OF ENHANCED SECURITY IN THE WAKE OF ATTACK
President Goodluck Jonathan has assured citizens and residents of Kano that the federal government would continue to further enhance the ability of the Police, Armed Forces and other security agencies to prosecute the war against terrorism to a successful conclusion and provide greater security of lives and property across the country following the attack at the Federal College of Education.
The President in a statement by his spokesman, Reuben Abati after the terrorist attack commiserated with citizens and residents on the loss of lives whilst sympathizing with victims.
“The President commends the officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force who took prompt action to confront the attackers and minimize resultant casualties.
“He urges them to be even more alert and proactive in the future to stop terrorist attacks in Kano and other parts of the country,” the statement said.
