January 30, (THEWILL) – After seeing Rafael Nadal win his 21st Grand Slam championship at the Australian Open, Roger Federer praised him as a “friend” and “amazing champion”.
Nadal overcame co-finalist Daniil Medvedev in five hours and 24 minutes on the Rod Laver Arena on Sunday to win the title in Melbourne and overtake Federer – who still has 20 Slam titles – in the Slam tally for Men’s Singles.
Federer’s celebration of Nadal’s accomplishment was devoid of any hint of envy. The Swiss posted: “To my friend and great rival Rafael Nadal, heartfelt congratulations on becoming the first man to win 21 Grand Slam singles titles.
“A few months ago we were joking about both being on crutches. Amazing. Never underestimate a great champion. Your incredible work ethic, dedication and fighting spirit are an inspiration to me and countless others around the world.
“I am proud to share this era with you and honoured to play a role in pushing you to achieve more, as you have done for me the past 18 years. I am sure you have more achievements ahead but for now enjoy this one.”
The 40-year-old Federer is now sidelined due to a long-standing knee injury that has kept him off the court since last summer, although he intends to return to the sport later in 2022.
