May 28, (THEWILL) – Yeni Kuti, daughter of legendary Afro-beat singer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has stated that her father shouldn’t have had children.
Yeni made this known in an interview with media personality, Chude Jideonwo, while speaking about the later years of her father.
Chude had asked if Fela was a good father. While answering, Yeni revealed her father wasn’t a good father in certain ways.
“In his own way yes, but in the commercial sense no! I don’t even think he should have had children, he should have just been a father to the whole nation,” she stated.
She added that Fela’s children didn’t feel any special bond of being Fela’s children, as her father sees his children as another human being.
“He was different. For instance, we didn’t call him daddy. I didn’t feel any special bond being Fela’s child,” she added.
The dancer believes her father didn’t die a happy man, she told Jideonwo that he was in pain when he died.
“He was quite ill, and someone that was ill, I don’t think can be happy,” she said.
Yeni, who left no stone unturned about the death of her father, believes her late father’s brother made the right decision by announcing he had died of complications arising from AIDS.
“If he had not announced it, the media would still be doing underground investigations trying to figure out what actually killed him,” she stated.
