October 25, (THEWILL) – Dutch side Feyenoord earned an impressive 3-1 victory over Lazio on Wednesday evening, in Rotterdam in their UEFA Champions League Group E tie. The win sees Feyenoord temporarily top the group with six points from their opening three matches.
The home side thought they had taken an early lead through Mexican striker Santiago Gimenez, only for his 25th-minute effort to be disallowed following a VAR review. However, Gimenez would get his goal just five minutes later, firing into the top corner from Mats Wieffer’s pass to score his first-ever UCL goal.
Feyenoord doubled their advantage before half-time, with Algerian midfielder, Ramiz Zerrouki, finishing off a fine team move by shooting home after good work from Calvin Stengs.
Gimenez grabbed his second of the night in the 74th minute, pouncing on the rebound after Quinten Timber’s shot was saved. Lazio did manage a late consolation, Pedro Rodriguez converting a penalty after Marcos Lopez fouled Valentin Castellanos, but it was too little too late for the visitors.
Although the victory sees Feyenoord move to the top of Group E, that could change after Atletico Madrid’s clash with Celtic. The Dutch side will travel to Rome to face Lazio again on November 7.
