July 19, (THEWILL) — Nigeria’s Under-19 women’s basketball team claimed a decisive 68-58 victory over Argentina in their FIBA World Cup classification match on Friday evening at the Starez Arena Vodova Hall 2 in Brno, Czech Republic.
The win advances Nigeria in the tournament’s 9-12 placement bracket, where they continue their campaign to finish amongst the competition’s top performers.
Playing before 97 spectators, the African representatives controlled proceedings for the majority of the contest, leading for nearly 28 minutes compared to Argentina’s brief five-minute advantage.
The Nigerian squad established their dominance early, taking the opening quarter 19-17 before maintaining their edge through a tight second period that ended 10-9 in their favour.
Their most commanding performance came in the third quarter, where they outscored Argentina 18-11 to build a comfortable cushion.
Although the final quarter ended level at 21-21, Nigeria had already established sufficient separation to claim the 10-point margin of victory.
Nora Ezike delivered the standout individual performance for Nigeria, recording 20 efficiency points to top the game’s statistical charts.
Her contribution proved crucial in maintaining Nigeria’s offensive rhythm throughout the four quarters.
Argentina’s Julia Bosque responded with 16 efficiency points for her team, but the South American side struggled to match Nigeria’s overall team output and shooting accuracy.
The statistics favoured Nigeria across multiple categories, with the winners converting 35.2% of their field goal attempts compared to Argentina’s 29%.
From the free-throw line, Nigeria maintained its superior accuracy at 70%, whilst Argentina managed 64.3%. Nigeria’s largest lead reached 16 points during the contest, demonstrating their ability to control the tempo when needed.
Both teams recorded identical 7-0 scoring runs at different stages of the match.
Officials Wissam Zein from Syria, Sandra Sanchez from Spain, and Xiao Zhang from China oversaw the proceedings, with Heba El Hadidy serving in the dual role of Commissioner and Technical Delegate.
The match featured six lead changes throughout, though Nigeria’s extended periods of control ultimately determined the outcome. This victory positions Nigeria favourably for their remaining classification matches in the tournament.
