December 15, (THEWILL) – The Super Falcons have dropped slightly in the latest FIFA world rankings published on Friday. From their August 2023 ranking of 32nd, the Falcons have fallen two spots to 34th place.
Despite this drop on the global stage, the nine-time African champions have maintained their number-one ranking continentally. Their impressive performance at the 2023 Women’s World Cup hosted in Australia and New Zealand earlier this year had previously seen the team rapidly climb from 40th to 32nd place.
The Falcons’ efforts were recognised at the 2023 CAF Awards held in Marrakech, Morocco on Monday, where Nigeria took home the Best Women’s National Team award.
Next on the schedule for the skilled Nigerian squad is the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, set to take place in Morocco. This tournament will provide an opportunity for the Falcons to offer another demonstration of their talents closer to home.
In the latest rankings, Spain claimed the top spot for the first time ever following their recent World Cup victory. The US Women’s National Team now sits at 2nd, having been dethroned from the position they had long occupied. Host nation Australia rose to 11th, reflecting their impressive World Cup performance and reaching the quarter-finals.
