December 05, (THEWILL) – The Uruguayan Football Association and four of the squad players, notably Edinson Cavani and Diego Godin, are the targets of disciplinary action by FIFA, as a result of the team’s outraged response to their World Cup loss.
Despite beating Ghana 2-0 on Friday, Uruguay was unable to advance from Group H as South Korea advanced instead, thanks to their comeback victory over Portugal.
After Diego Alonso’s squad were ultimately eliminated based on goals scored, some players became enraged, especially when Cavani’s late penalty appeal was turned down after he was brought down in the Ghanaian 18-yard box.
After the final whistle, the former Manchester United striker was seen on social media knocking the VAR monitor over as several other Uruguay players surrounded the referee, Daniel Siebert.
In a statement made on Monday, FIFA went into depth about the allegations, which included alleged wrongdoing on the part of Uruguayan athletes and officials, as well as insulting behaviour and discrimination. Cavani, Godin, Jose Gimenez, and Fernando Muslera, were also included in the statement as being the subject of separate investigations for suspected offences involving insulting behaviour, contraventions of the rules of fair play, and misbehaviour.
