BEVERLY HILLS, December 22, (THEWILL) –Â Zoran Filipovic, the Montenegrin, has been unveiled as Libya’s new coach in a press conference organised by the Libyan Football Association (LFA) in Tripoli.
The 67-year-old expressed his happiness to be given this challenging experience. This is because he decided to work from within Libya after years of foreign coaches guiding the national team from outside Libya as a result of the internal situation of the country.
Filipovic expressed his willingness to be fully committed to the success of the Mediterranean Knights. Working within the country will afford him the chance to follow all age groups as well as participating clubs in continental challenges such as CAF Interclub competitions, as well as the domestic tournaments which are currently suspended because of coronavirus precautions.
He is the third coach to guide the Mediterranean Knights during the Total Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021 qualifiers, after the Tunisian Faouzi Benzarti and Ali Merguini from Libya.
High on the priority concerns for Filipovic will be shepherding the national side across the challenges of the Total African Nations Championship (CHAN), billed for next year in Cameroon. His biggest challenge will be qualifying Libya for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Libya is in Group F alongside Egypt, Gabon and Angola.
This is Filipovic’s first job in Africa. He had previously managed the Montenegrin and Serbian national teams plus various European and Asian clubs. He will be assisted by Mohamed Al-Kikli, who led Al Nasr to the Total CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinals in their previous campaign.
