October 06, (THEWILL) – Enyimba Manager, Finidi George, has said his side are prepared for the challenge of defending their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title this season. The People’s Elephant get their campaign underway on Sunday, away to Gombe United.
Speaking ahead of the match, Finidi explained how Enyimba planned to handle the pressure of being champions. “We’ve already discussed with the players that we must stick to our ideologies, regardless of the situation,” he said. “This will give us an identity and a chance.”
Finidi understands expectations are high amongst fans, but is confident his squad has the quality needed. “The players we have can deliver,” he stated. “We are all motivated and ready.”
Specifically on the Gombe United match, Finidi anticipates a difficult game, especially given that they are the team to beat this season. “They always make it hard, especially at home with their supporters behind them,” he said. “But we fancy our chances if we maintain a positive approach like last season.”
Enyimba won numerous away matches during their title-winning campaign. Finidi will hope for a similarly resolute performance on Sunday, to begin the defence of their crown with three points. They start a week later than others because their original opening opponents of September 30, Bendel Insurance, were engaged in a continental competition fixture.
